Work-Life Balance: The Motherhood Spin

The Work-Life Balance of Motherhood: The Beautiful Chaos

Balancing a career and motherhood is one of the most rewarding yet challenging experiences a mother can face. One moment, you’re crushing a presentation at work, and the next, you’re trying to negotiate with a toddler who refuses to wear shoes. It’s a constant dance between professional ambitions and family life, often leaving mothers feeling stretched thin. But despite the chaos, there is immense joy in the journey.

As a mother, I have come to appreciate the beautiful and challenging “dance” that is being a mom. For most of the work days, I am in the office for half days. Which means, I start my day with a run and go into the office and then come home to get the kids off the bus. This is a blessing because I get to get the kids off the bus and see their faces when they come home from a long day of learning.

They are tired. I am tired. We both meet one another where we are. We both work to bridge the gap in our days and come to a place of meaning and purpose.

I am throwing in laundry while taking phone calls. Scheduling zooms while I am helping with science projects. There is a constant push/ pull and I love it, while also being challenged by it.

I’m not only a mom, but I am also a wife. I love to cook and bake, but quickly, that becomes one more thing that I need to complete during a long work day!

Even so, I realize the blessing and joy that comes from the dance and the balance of it all.

I’m thankful and very blessed. What makes you spin as you navigate the balance between motherhood, work and life?

The Push and Pull of Work and Family

Returning to work after maternity leave is a rollercoaster of emotions. There’s excitement in getting back to a job you love, but also guilt when you have to say goodbye to your child each morning. The pressure to excel in both areas can lead to exhaustion and self-doubt.

Some of the biggest challenges include:

  • Time Management: There never seem to be enough hours in the day. Work deadlines, school drop-offs, meal prep, and bedtime routines all demand attention at the same time.

  • Guilt and Expectations: Society has a way of making working mothers feel like they’re either failing at their job or failing as a parent—when in reality, they’re doing their best at both.

  • Lack of Support: Without a strong support system, whether from a partner, family, or employer, juggling everything can feel impossible.

  • Workplace Challenges: Not all companies embrace flexible working arrangements, making it tough to meet family commitments without feeling like you’re falling behind at work.

Finding Joy in the Chaos

While balance may never be perfect, working moms find ways to make it work. Here are a few strategies that help keep the juggling act from becoming overwhelming:

1. Setting Boundaries and Priorities

Not every email needs an immediate response, and not every school event requires homemade cupcakes. Learning to prioritize what truly matters makes a world of difference. Creating clear work and family boundaries—like turning off work notifications after hours—can also prevent burnout.

2. Leaning on a Support System

No one should have to do it all alone. Whether it’s sharing responsibilities with a partner, seeking help from family, or joining a network of working moms, having support makes the journey easier.

3. Embracing Flexible Work Options

More companies are recognizing the need for flexible work arrangements. Whether it’s remote work, hybrid schedules, or adjusted hours, advocating for what works best for your family can create a more sustainable balance.

4. Letting Go of Perfection

Spoiler alert: perfection is a myth. Some days, dinner will be takeout. Some days, emails will have typos. And some days, kids will wear mismatched socks to school. Letting go of unrealistic expectations allows space for more joy and less stress.

5. Prioritizing Self-Care

It’s easy to put yourself last when balancing work and family, but self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. Taking time for exercise, hobbies, or even a quiet cup of coffee can make all the difference in feeling recharged and ready to take on the day.

Redefining Success- Giving Ourselves Grace

Success as a working mother doesn’t mean having it all figured out. It means creating a life where both work and family can thrive—where some days lean more toward career wins, and others are all about bedtime snuggles. It also means giving ourselves grace during the more challenging times.

There will always be challenges, but there will also be moments of pure joy: the look on your child’s face when they see you at school pickup, the sense of accomplishment after a productive day at work, and the deep satisfaction of knowing you are building a life filled with purpose and love.

The goal isn’t perfection—it’s making it all work in a way that feels right for you. And in that, there is balance.
